Alex Silverman...

Alex Silverman has recently been appointed the new Musical Director of the West End Singers. A versatile conductor, performer and composer, he has worked with a host of choirs, orchestras and other ensembles as diverse as English Touring Opera, the Julian Joseph Big Band, and electro-pop outfit Hot Chip. He was lucky enough to attend Winchester College, where he began to train as a tenor with Hilary Llystyn Jones, and his love of choral music became ingrained.  Now, with 20 years' singing experience under his belt, he remains passionate about working with voices, and is thrilled to be returning to Hampshire to lead the West End Singers.

Since graduating from Cambridge University in 2001, Alex has carved out a career as a Musical Director and Composer, specialising in creating live music for the theatre.  In recent years he has composed for five plays at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and made music for productions at Young Vic, Royal Court Theatre, National Theatre Studio, London's West End, and many regional theatres.  He has co-written three musicals which have toured in the UK, Europe and the Far East, and has contributed to 15 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, for which he has twice been nominated for Total Theatre Awards. He has also undertaken commissions for BBC Radio 4, Channel 4 TV,  SkyArts, as well as countless pieces for smaller film projects and chamber ensembles.  Alex's choral compositions have been short listed for the John Armitage Memorial Prize, and the St Paul's Composition Prize.
